What's more fun than Legos? Adding a stop-motion app to record the building process! We used the MyCreate app to make stop motion videos. Check out this blog post to learn more about the process. Enjoy!

Design Thinking Activities

What is design thinking? AJ Juliani's definition is a way to think creatively; using empathy and questioning to listen to the needs of someone to design a product to best help or solve a problem.

The second graders have been using design thinking to solve problems of book characters. Mrs. Garcia's class has used fairy tales to have students solve a problem for different characters.

They created a latch for the three bears to keep Goldilocks out of their house.Read about the blog post, The Three Bears: Help from Second Graders, to learn more about the process.

They also built houses for the 3 pigs that couldn't be blown down by the Big Bad Wolf (a hairdryer). See the post, A Better House for the Three Pigs, for more information on the challenge.

Mrs. Zabriskie's class designed a way to keep Flat Stanley from being flattened when the bulletin board fell on him. Read Flat Stanley Needs Help to learn more about the process.
Mrs. Shapard's students have designed a room for Stuart Little. Read Wanted: Tiny Rooms for Stuart Little to find out more about the process.

Dr. Seuss Fun!

What fun we have during Seuss week! When the second graders came to the lab, we read The Foot Book, by Dr. Seuss. The children were asked to design a whimsical foot or shoe and then tell about it. We used the app, Book Creator, to create class ebooks that can be read on an iOS device. The books have also been saved as a video that can be seen on any computer or mobile device. Here are the links to both.

If you are downloading the ePub books, remember that you need to click on the book link while on an iOS device having the iBooks app. Choose download and open in iBooks. (We had several children absent on the day that we made the books. If you don't see your child's work, that is the reason.)

Second graders have been learning about the Rainforest and wanted to share their knowledge. Their work has been saved in two formats: video and ePub book. To open the book, click on the links below while on an iOS device that has the iBooks app installed. Choose download and open in iBooks.
